Stage 1: Getting ready

Look with me

  1. Drop a ball in and watch it fly.
  2. Say "Look!" and turn to your child with a big, happy face.
  3. Wait for them to look back at you. That shared look is the goal.

Stage 2: First sounds & words

In, up, out

  1. Say the same three words each time: "In… up… out!"
  2. After a few rounds, pause before "out".
  3. Let your child fill in the last word, in any way they can.

Stage 3: Putting words together

My turn, your turn

  1. Take turns dropping the balls in.
  2. Say it each time: "My turn." "Your turn."
  3. Add a little more: "Ball up high!" "Red ball out!"

Stage 4: Back and forth

Where will it land?

  1. Before each drop ask "Where will it go?"
  2. Accept a point or a word as an answer.
  3. Afterward, talk about it: "It went far! Let's try the red one."

Help, please

  1. Turn the toy off and stay close.
  2. When your child wants it on, model "help" or "on" on their board or device.
  3. Turn it on right away so they see their message worked.
