How to use this toy to build talking

Stage 1: Getting ready

Ready, set… go!

  1. Hold a ball at the top of the tower.
  2. Say "Ready, set…" and stop. Wait up to 10 seconds.
  3. A look, a sound, a reach or "go" all count. Then let it roll.

Stage 2: First sounds & words

One ball at a time

  1. Keep the balls with you and hand them over one at a time.
  2. Pause before each one so your child can ask with a reach, a sign or a word.
  3. Name what they asked for: "More!"

Stage 3: Putting words together

Add a word

  1. When your child says one word, say it back with one more word.
  2. "Ball" becomes "blue ball". "Down" becomes "ball down!"
  3. Don't ask them to repeat it. Just keep modeling.

Stage 4: Back and forth

Where does it go next?

  1. Build the tower together.
  2. Hold up two pieces: "This one or that one?"
  3. Before each run ask "What will happen?" and wait for a guess.

Stage 5: Other ways to talk

Point and talk

  1. Put a word board next to the tower.
  2. Touch "go" on the board every time you say it.
  3. Don't require your child to touch it. Keep modeling and they'll learn it's theirs to use.
